An Energy Carrier (Candidate) can represent any energy-containing substance or medium which can be converted, stored and transported. It can be a gaseous or solid fuel, an electrical charge, thermal energy, solar irradiance, etc.

In this step, you specify the energy carriers to be considered in your analysis.  For each energy carrier, a Type, Subtype and Name must be defined.  For the Type and Subtype, a selection can be made from a list of pre-defined values – see the table below.  In case the Type or Subtype you wish to specify cannot be found here, you can choose the Type or Subtype Custom. Note that there is not data directly attached to the type and subtype of your energy carriers. You will later be able to specify data (Costs and CO2 emissions) for them.

You can always return to this step to add further energy carriers later.  If you try to add e.g. a supply technology which is not in your list of energy carriers, the software will ask you if you would like to add the missing energy carrier to this list.
